The Local SEO Checklist: Get Into the Google Map Pack
For local businesses, the map pack is the new front door. Use this checklist to optimize your Google Business Profile, reviews, citations and location pages.

When someone searches for "plumber near me" or "accountant in Houston," Google typically shows a map with three businesses before any regular results. Those three spots capture a large share of clicks and calls. If you serve a local market, earning a place there should be a priority.
Google Business Profile essentials
- Claim and verify your profile and make sure you control the owner account.
- Choose the right primary category. This is one of the most influential settings. Add relevant secondary categories.
- Complete every field: hours, services, products, attributes, service areas and description.
- Use your real business name. Adding keywords to your name violates guidelines and risks suspension.
- Add quality photos of your team, work, premises and vehicles regularly.
- Publish Google Posts for offers, news and updates.
- Answer questions in the Q&A section before others do.
Reviews: quantity, quality and recency
- Build a simple process to ask every happy customer for a review
- Use a short link or QR code that opens the review form directly
- Encourage customers to mention the service and location naturally
- Reply to every review, positive or negative, professionally
- Never buy reviews or offer incentives against platform rules
Citations and consistency
Make sure your business name, address and phone number (NAP) are identical across your website, directories, social profiles and industry sites. Inconsistent details confuse search engines and AI tools alike.
Proximity you cannot change. Relevance and prominence you can. That is where local SEO lives.
Your website matters too
- Create a dedicated page for each core service
- Create genuine location pages for each area you serve, with unique content
- Add LocalBusiness schema with your NAP and opening hours
- Embed a map and include driving directions or service area details
- Show local reviews and case studies
Local authority signals
Sponsor local events, join chambers of commerce, partner with complementary businesses and earn mentions in local news. Local links are strong signals of local prominence.
Track what matters
Map pack rankings vary by where the searcher is standing. Use grid based rank tracking to see visibility across your area, and watch profile insights for calls, website visits and direction requests.
