n8n vs Zapier vs Make: Choosing the Right Automation Platform in 2026
All three platforms connect your apps and automate work. They differ sharply in pricing, flexibility, AI capabilities and data control. Here is how to choose.

Automation platforms are the glue of the modern business. They move leads from forms to CRMs, send follow ups, sync data and increasingly orchestrate AI tasks. Zapier, Make and n8n are the three names we are asked about most. Each is excellent for a different kind of business.
Zapier: the easiest place to start
Zapier pioneered no code automation and has the largest library of app integrations. Its interface is simple and approachable for non technical users.
- Best for: simple, linear automations and teams who want to build their own
- Strengths: ease of use, huge app library, reliability
- Watch out for: pricing based on tasks that rises quickly with volume, and limited flexibility for complex logic
Make: visual power at a moderate price
Make, formerly Integromat, offers a visual canvas for building multi branch scenarios with routers, iterators and data transformations.
- Best for: moderately complex workflows with branching logic
- Strengths: visual design, good value, strong data manipulation
- Watch out for: operation based pricing at scale and a steeper learning curve than Zapier
n8n: flexibility, control and AI
n8n is a fair code workflow platform that can be self hosted or used in the cloud. It combines visual workflows with the ability to write code, and includes powerful AI agent and LLM nodes.
- Best for: businesses where automation is core to operations, high volume workflows, AI agents and privacy sensitive data
- Strengths: self hosting with no per task fees, unlimited logic, custom code, native AI capabilities, data stays on your server
- Watch out for: self hosting requires setup, security and maintenance, which is where an experienced partner helps
If automation is a convenience, choose the easiest tool. If automation is infrastructure, choose the one you control.
How to choose
Volume
If you will run thousands of executions a month, per task pricing becomes significant. Self hosted n8n often costs a fraction at scale.
Complexity
Branching, loops, error handling, custom data transformation and AI agents favor Make or n8n. n8n handles the most demanding scenarios.
Data sensitivity
Healthcare, legal, financial and client data often benefit from self hosting so data does not pass through additional third parties.
Who will maintain it
If non technical staff will build and edit workflows themselves, Zapier is friendliest. If a partner manages your automation, n8n offers the most capability for the cost.
Our recommendation
We build most client automation on self hosted n8n because it scales without punishing growth, keeps data in the client's control and makes AI workflows straightforward. That said, we happily work with Zapier and Make when a client is already invested, and we migrate workflows when the economics or capabilities justify it.
