SEO vs AEO vs GEO: What Each One Means and Why You Need All Three
Three acronyms, one goal: being found when customers are looking. Here is how traditional SEO, Answer Engine Optimization and Generative Engine Optimization fit together.

Marketing loves acronyms, and the last two years have added two more to the list. If you are confused about SEO, AEO and GEO, you are not alone. The good news is that they are not competing strategies. They are three layers of the same goal: making sure your business is found, understood and chosen.
SEO: Search Engine Optimization
SEO improves your visibility in traditional search results, the familiar list of links on Google and Bing. It covers technical health, keyword targeting, content quality, internal linking, page experience and authority from links and mentions.
Goal: rank pages for searches with buying intent and earn clicks.
AEO: Answer Engine Optimization
AEO structures your content so that search engines and assistants can lift a direct answer from it. This includes featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice assistant responses and the answer portion of AI summaries.
Goal: be the source of the answer, even when the user never clicks.
Core techniques include question based headings, concise two to three sentence answers placed right after the question, FAQ sections, definition style formatting, tables and lists, and FAQ or HowTo schema where appropriate.
GEO: Generative Engine Optimization
GEO focuses on generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews. These tools compose original answers and may mention or cite brands. GEO improves your odds of being included and described accurately.
Goal: be recommended and cited in AI generated answers.
Core techniques include entity consistency across the web, expert and original content, structured data, third party mentions and reviews, and technical accessibility for AI crawlers.
How they overlap
Think of it as a stack:
- SEO is the foundation. Crawlable, fast, well structured pages with real authority.
- AEO is the format. Content shaped into clear, extractable answers.
- GEO is the reputation. A consistent, trusted identity across the entire web.
A well executed FAQ section, for example, helps all three. It targets long tail searches (SEO), provides extractable answers (AEO) and gives AI clear facts to cite (GEO).
You do not have to choose. Done properly, one piece of work serves all three.
What to prioritize first
If your technical SEO is broken, fix that first. Nothing else works without it. Next, rewrite your most important service pages in an answer first format with FAQs. Then invest in entity consistency, reviews and third party mentions. Measure all three: rankings and organic traffic for SEO, snippet and PAA appearances for AEO, and AI mention tracking for GEO.
A quick self check
- Do your key pages rank on page one for at least some buying keywords?
- Does each service page answer the top five buyer questions directly?
- Is your business name, address, phone and description identical everywhere?
- Do AI assistants mention you when asked for recommendations in your niche?
If you answered no to any of these, there is visibility on the table. The opportunity is real because most competitors have not started yet.
